DK Consultants LLC will provide counseling and treatment for individuals suffering from all forms of Mood Disorders, Psychotic Disorders and Substance Use Disorders.

Mood disorders, also known as affective disorders, are disorders that primarily affect mood states. Common examples are Major Depressive Disorders, various Anxiety Disorders, and Bipolar Disorders. Each disorder can then be further broken down into subcategories. Anxiety Disorders include Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder (Social phobia), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and specific phobias such as agoraphobia.

Contrary to popular beliefs, major depressive disorder is not the same as sadness; it is much deeper and much more distressing. It is a serious mood disorder characterized by a constellation of symptoms that together make up the syndrome known as major depression, a disorder involving certain brain neurochemicals. Most individuals suffering from major depression will need treatment, either in the form of psychotherapy or a combination of medications and therapy; you cannot “just snap yourself out of it” as well meaning friends or family members are wont to say. It is also not a sign of weakness of your will or mind.

Psychotic Disorders are disorders characterized by impairment in reality testing; there is a loss of contact with reality. Psychotic symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, and bizarre behavior, thinking or speech. Delusions are false beliefs which the individual holds to be absolutely true despite clear evidence to everyone else that they are false. Hallucinations, on the other hand, are feeling states that occur when there is no stimulus. Hearing voices when the individual is alone is referred to as auditory hallucinations, while seeing things that nobody else can see is called visual hallucinations. Examples of Psychotic Disorders include Schizophrenia and Delusional Disorder. It is worth noting, however, that severe mood disorders may result in psychosis. For example, there could be Severe Depressive Disorders with Psychotic Symptoms, or Bipolar Disorder, Severe, with Psychotic Symptoms.

Substance use disorders describe the abuse of alcohol or illicit substances such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, crystal meth, and so on. They also include abuse of prescription painkillers and sedatives such as Oxycontin, Percocet, Xanax or Valium. Individuals who abuse these substances may become dependent (addicted) to them leaving them at high risk of serious physical, emotional or social complications. In addition to psychotherapy, social and spiritual interventions, there are medications to assist the recovery from alcohol, nicotine and opioids (heroin and prescription opioids)

Illicit substance and alcohol abuse may lead to severe mood disorders as well as psychosis. Dual diagnosis is a term used to describe conditions in which major psychiatric disorders coexist with substance use disorders.
